Tenet Had to be Pushed to Take Responsibility

CIA Director George Tenet took responsibility for approving a
controversial claim made by President Bush in his State of the Union
address that Saddam Hussein sought uranium from Niger only after Tenet
was urged to do so by a senior White House official traveling with the
president in Africa.

"Tenet took responsibility hours after he got a phone call from here
in Africa from Condoleezza Rice," reported ABC Radio News White House
correspondent Ann Compton Saturday morning.

"The national security advisor called him and said, 'Remember, you got
a copy of that speech. You didn't tell us to take that out,'" Compton
revealed.

The ABC reporter said Rice "made it quite clear" during her phone call
to Tenet "that President Bush wasn't going to be doing any
apologizing" for repeating the claim that Iraq sought uranium in
Africa in the speech Tenet had approved.

While Rice told reporters earlier in the day that the CIA Director had
approved the speech "in its entirety," Tenet, who was appointed by
President Clinton in 1997, apparently had no intention of taking
responsibility until Rice's phone call.

But hours after the call, Tenet released a statement which read in
part:

First, C.I.A. approved the president's State of the Union address
before it was delivered.

Second, I am responsible for the approval process in my agency.

And third, the president had every reason to believe that the text
presented to him was sound.

These 16 words should never have been included in the text written for
the president."

Tenet had remained mum on the controversy since it exploded on
Tuesday, when an unnamed White House official told the Washington
Post, "Knowing all that we know now, the reference to Iraq's attempt
to acquire uranium from Africa should not have been included in the
State of the Union speech."

The document that supposedly proved Iraq was secretly trying to buy uranium from
Niger was fabricated.

And the CIA knew the document was fabricated.
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

The CIA knew because Ex-ambassador Joe Wilson went to Niger to verify the document.
He returned and reported that the nuclear link to Iraq did not exist.

Congress should find out who put a KNOWN LIE lie in the State of the Union Address.

Whoever put this KNOWN LIE in the State of the Union Address committed a war crime
because this was a deliberate provocation to wage war against a country that did not
threaten America.
