Here, you goose-stepping neo-con fascist: Blown Out Of Context The Baldwin Incident http://www.biercephile.com/conan/baldwin.html On December 11, 1998, Alec Baldwin was a guest on Late Night. In a pre-staged bit, Baldwin, parodying his "Attack Dog Hollywood Liberal" image, went on an insane tirade about Henry Hyde, which got more and more rabid until he ended up calling for the death of the entire Hyde family. What 90% of the media missed was that it was a comedy bit. Most thought it was an unprovoked outburst of sincere murderous intent by Baldwin. The question Conan asked was a set-up, and after the tirade was over, Conan had a mock oxygen bottle ready under his desk to sedate Alec. Accepting that it was a bit, many others, especially conservative groups, decried the the comedy as in poor taste. That is certainly a matter of opinion, but the fact remains that Baldwin was parodying himself and his image with the bit, and the outburst was, to anyone who actually saw the show, an obvious sketch not meant to be taken seriously. Jean Westley provided a transcript of the event, which follows. Conan: It's no secret you're very political. It's no secret you've actually had associations with the Clintons. You're a liberal man and I thought today, it's an historic day, and you're one of the most politically active actors out there, What do you think? Alec: I was in Africa, I go to Africa. Ladies and Gentleman, I'm in Africa for three months, in the bush and I come back. I come back to what? I mean, what's happening? Right now, as I speak, the judiciary committee, the President has an approval rating of 68%, things are going pretty good and they're voting to impeach the President! They voted on one article of impeachment already! And I come back from Africa to stained dresses and cigars and this and impeachment and other countries are laughing at us twenty-four hours a day! And I'm thinking to myself, if we were other countries we would all right now, all of us together, ALL OF US TOGETHER! We would go down to Washington and we would stone Henry Hyde to death! STONE HIM TO DEATH! (crowd cheers) WAIT! SHUT UP! SHUT UP! I'm not finished! We would stone Henry Hyde to death THEN WE'D GO INTO THEIR HOMES AND KILL THEIR WIVES AND THEIR CHILDREN! (Baldwin yelling, getting hyper and pounding on the table) WE'D KILL THEIR FAMILIES AND RUIN THEIR FAMILIES! (Baldwin stands up, his chair topples backwards) WHAT IS HAPPENING TO THIS COUNTRY? WHAT IS HAPPENING TO THIS COUNTRY? AAAUUGGGGGGHH! (Conan gives him the oxygen mask, Baldwin sits down, breathing deeply, calms down) Conan: Okay... You're hosting Saturday Night Live this week.... Baldwin: I'm sorry, I'm sorry --- "I spewed bodily fluids." - Shydavid http://www.skeptictank.org/ http://www.RonTheNut.ORG/ PGP: http://www.skeptictank.org/frice.pgp -- You love drugs! And, as I think I've said elsewhere, can you imagine the reactions had someone tried to do that bit aimed at one of the left's darlings... say, Bill Clinton? |
