JACKSON, Tenn. - A Tennessee frozen food company discriminated against
more than 300 black and white job applicants who were rejected in favor
of Hispanic workers, the federal Department of Labor said.

Under an agreement reached in late May with the federal agency,
Pictsweet Frozen Foods must distribute $125,534 to the applicants and
offer them jobs as general laborers.

The discrimination was discovered during a routine audit in July 2001.

"They were bad," said Theresa Lee, acting regional director of the Labor
Department's federal compliance office in Atlanta. "Otherwise, we would
not have inferred discrimination so easily from the ratio of the hired
workers versus the applicants. It was obvious from the numbers."

Laird Jones, Pictsweet's legal counsel, refused to comment on the
agreement, which was reported Sunday by The Jackson Sun.

Lee said she did not know the number of Hispanics hired during the audit
period, from March 1, 2000, to Feb. 28, 2001. Census figures show 800
Hispanics lived in Crockett County in 2000, 5 percent of the total.

United Foods Inc. markets frozen vegetables and meats under several
labels, including Pictsweet. It operates farms or food processing plants
in Bells, Tenn., California, Utah and Delaware.

The Bells plant, which freezes vegetables, employs 500 workers. Bells is
about 15 miles northwest of Jackson.

Bells Police Chief Ilandis Smith said at least one arrest and five cases
of identity theft last year involved illegal immigrants trying to get
identification to work at Pictsweet. In 1995, Immigration and
Naturalization Service agents rounded up 19 illegal immigrants there.

"Often when you see companies systematically hiring immigrant workers
and not blacks and whites, the reason is they feel they can pay them
less," said the Rev. Rebekah Jordan, executive director of Mid-South
Interfaith Network for Economic Justice. "That is to the disadvantage of
everyone."

Bells Mayor Harold Craig defended the company as a "good corporate citizen."

At the moment, California is approaching being the contemporary
equivalent of New York City during the headier big-government liberal
days that people in most other places quickly outgrew with their
childhood, particularly after the Reagan Rescue beginning in 1980.

New York City bankrupted itself due to liberal Democratic politics and
policies, and now Gray Davis and the institutionalized Democrats in
Sacramento, after many decades of liberal lunacy, are about to
bankrupt California.

As far as "Mexifornia," as of now the bill to grant driver's licenses
to illegal immigrants was passed in committee in Sacramento by
Democrats over GOP objections and advances to the next stage through
the process.
