Ten Commandments Allowed in Courthouses

A federal court says an 83-year-old plaque of the Ten Commandments may be
displayed at a Pennsylvania courthouse - for historic, not religious,
reasons.

A three-judge panel of the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled today the
plaque's age, not its religious content, was the prime motivation behind the
Chester County Commissioners' refusal to remove the plaque.

The decision is likely to be taken to the U.S. Supreme Court because three
other federal appellate courts have ruled against displaying such symbols.

Chester County commissioners say the issue is historic preservation, not
support of religion. They said the ruling would affect hundreds of
courthouses across the nation, many of which are historic sites.
