If Diversity Made Us Great, Where’s the Problem?

June 23, 2003

I ask people this question all the time: “Do you think diversity made
this country great?” Many liberals will say, “Oh yes” like the caller
in the audio link below. Well then, a little intellectual exercise for
you, my friends. If diversity has made America great, then where's the
problem? Why do we need any at all? Why do we need more? If diversity
has made us so great, then where's the problem? I don't see it.

We spent a stretch of Monday’s journey into broadcast excellence
discussing how the Supreme Court of the United States just amended the
Constitution, in effect, ignoring the Fourteenth Amendment.

I don't think diversity has had the slightest thing to do with making
this country great. What made this country great is our freedom,
allowing each individual in this country to utilize his or her
ambition, talents and desire to seek opportunity to be the best they
can be.

We all face obstacles, some greater than others, some more unfair than
others, but we all face them, and we all have to find ways to overcome
them. Some of us have decided to join the victim crowd and petition
the government to make things right, while others just work harder at
overcoming our individual barriers. I think this whole new legal
concept of diversity is going to be destructive, and it’s going to
diminish the elements of greatness in this country because it's
irrelevant.

Focus on Excellence and Superior Achievement, Not Diversity

After I took the phone call from Glo in Florida, which you may hear in
the audio link below, I received the following e-mail:

Rush,

Oh Great One. I think a point is being missed here. The liberal agenda
is not diversity. It is uniformity!! Liberals want all people to be
the same, and not an elevated sameness, but a “dumbed down” sameness.
Kurt Vonegut wrote a great short story in a collection called “Welcome
to the Monkey House.” The story is called “Harrison Bergeron” and
tells of a society where people are all handicapped by the
“Handicapper General” to be sure they are no better than anyone else
at anything!! It is a short and great read and it makes a great
argument against political correctness.

I am convinced O’ Great one that the liberal goal is that we all be
relegated to a casper milktoast, inoffensive bunch of controlled
sheep. Do you agree??
