Hardly surprising, really. Consider that argument by anecdote came
into it's own under Reagan. Little that he actually said was actually
true.....given this, why would one put a great deal of faith in the
direct quote?

A truly great president indeed. Didn't FDR and Churchill use

I remember Reagan saying " Mr Gorbachev,, tear down this
wall !!! "
That wasn't an anecdote but it was typical of Reagan.
Calling the USSR the " Evil Empire " wasn't an anecdote
either but it was dynamic.
