They did not. What they did say was that they could not corroborate the US
and UK allegations. And if anyone had people on the ground in a position to
corroborate such allegations, these three nations, with world class
intelligence services and no need to rely solely on doubtful defectors,
covert spies and electronic resources, did. All three had extensive
diplomatic and commercial ties going back many years and hardly in terrupted
by 1991, had thusands of official and non-official citizens on the grouns at
all times, unlimke the US, and were in a far better poosition to say what
Iraq had or did not have. They pointedly did not state that Itraq had WMDs,
though they did hedge. Who knew? Despite all that, maybe the CIA realky did
know something they did not. As it turned out, the CIA did not.

You will recall how steamed Bush got when neither Blix nor the IAEA could
come up with a smoking gun and how they tried to pressure Bush into saying
what they wanted him to say.

I mention again a political cartoon that appeared many, many months ago. Two
men in a military situation room. One says to the other "Do you think Iraq
really has weapons of mass destruction?" The other, laugghing, says "Of
course not! Do yu really think we would attack if they did?" Exactly.
