Bob Long Defiant 2 in review
Andrew C. Syren Bob Long has made a huge name for himself in paintball and being nicknamed the Godfather of Paintball, he deserves every bit of respect given to him these days. With his initial creation of the Intimidator Bob Long launched paintball into a world of speed and power. Having a small understanding of how Bob Long changed the face of paintball with the introduction of the Timmy, I can say with confidence that he has once again, changed the face of paintball for the second time. Only this time he has done so with a whisper. For the rest: http://www.paintballtimes.com |

Every one of the original gun people contributed greatly to the cause, whether that contribution was good or bad, that is another argument. |

John you were 100% right with tom kaye....he still is huge in my
eyes....some guys get a lil more lucky than others or a lil more popular but all have done there share in paintball. Bob Long and I have had some good times. I have played on his property many times, one hell of a nice man...best back player i know of... This is a load of crap. Bob Long has been a big name in paintball for
a long time, sure, and I liked the guy when I met him back not long after the Intimidators came out, but he didn't launch paintball into anything. I don't think he even invented anything significantly outstanding. The basic design of the Intimidator may be a success, but its success is as much due to the power of marketing and surrounding the same internals in a dozen different milling & anno designs. |

Glen Palmer. Top of the list.
You can drop Dave "my name isn't really Youngblood" Youngblood out of there. His biggest claim to fame was a pin striped suit that he played in that got him noticed, and having the good fortune to get to know Jessica Sparks, and the rest was history. Right place, right time, persistence, and a whole lot of schmoozing got him where he is. That and having the sense to marry the daughter of a certain industry big wig. His usefulness is being a "Name" that people can attach to products they design. Bob Long's biggest mistake was taking him under his wing with the Ironmen and then having the ungrateful wretch try to steal his team right out from under him. I'll pass on Mr. Dehaan thank you very much. I'd have to give him credit for being at the head of the custom autococker
craze. Back in the day, if you didn't have a Bob Long autococker (or Danny Love), you didn't have crap. I'd also have to credit him for creating what could be called the first real Powerhouse paintball team. The original Ironmen team he cultivated made people shake in their boots. If you weren't at the very top of your game, and a GREAT team to boot, playing them was the fast track to getting your ass, hat, and anything else you happened to be carrying handed to you. Yeah, I remember those custom Cocker days, although I think that was as
much the same power of marketing as anything. I'm trying to remember if there was anything other than centerfeed and anno that Bob guns had over any other built guns that were appearing at the time; I preferred BBT and (believe it or not) the Paintball Mania Cockers that were showing up in Memphis. But what just annoys the crap out of me is this absurd notion that one gun "changed the face of paintball"...if it's the case, it sure wasn't the Intimidator. |

Better keep backing up. Bob's original customer cockers didn't come with
anodized anything, unless it was black. "Custom" cockers in the beginning days were all about adjustable regs and adjustable triggers and that's just about as far as it went. Center feeds and those spiffy colors started to appear a few years later. The AA's were running modified PMI III's Fast Eddie was in the process of digesting a Knuckle Sandwich from Keith Idema (is he still rotting in an Afghani prison somewhere? Whatever happened with that?) I seem to remember Mr. Love getting one of his guns pulled from a tournament because a ref spotted a toggle switch mounted on the side. It was labeled "Near" and "Far". Totally bogus but such was his rep with cocker tweaking that people didn't doubt that he could have pulled something like that off, and that was LONG before electros showed up. There were some real tweakers back in those days. I remember a guy, I believe his name was Dave Slane, that rigged up a fully automatic automag that was totally pneumatic. The rate of fire could be adjusted with a screwdriver through the side of the gripframe and all the pertinent bits and pieces fit inside the grip. I'm fairly certain he used to hang here. Maybe I'm getting that part messed up. This was back when Shockers were made by PneuVenture and the AA's had to have a literal truck load of the damn things just so they could get through a tournament. Biggest pieces of unreliable electropneumatic crap going. I watched Bill Gardner back his 6-door ford dually into Indian Springs' van and then just drive away. The owner of Indian Springs saw it as well but took it in stride as "Well, there's one more hit Billy won't call". Priceless. Angels were just getting ready to hit the market and were head and shoulders above shockers in the engineering department. The prototype had a titanium barrel with an anodized aluminum tip and was a work of art. Never made to production for some reason. They were the most expensive paintgun going and as soon as they came out the price of every other high end "tournament" gun shot up to match. Hey, if an autococker COSTS as much as an Angel it has to be just as good right? Aw, memories. There aren't too many guys in here that have been in this game as long as I have. A few, but not many. Don't take anything above as a timeline as events are jumbled, like my memory, but at one time or another in paintball history it all took place.
