When I started reading this group more than a decade ago it was one of the
principle online forums for talking about paintball, well-known figures from
teams or manufacturers posted here or at least lurked. Today there are many
other places to yak about paintball, web-based forums all over the place,
and many are specialized so people interested just in scenario games or
tourneys or whatever can find just the right audience for their views.
Rec.sport.paintball is just too generalized a forum and doesn't have any
commercial entities pushing it for it to be as popular as it once was, some
ISPs don't even carry Usenet any more. I don't think woods-ball vs.
tourneys or anything like that is responsible for the group's decline, it's
simply a case of competition from other venues.

I honestly don't know where the game is going today Tony, a fellow I know
who just opened a field operation -- tourney-style speedball -- is now in
the process of opening up a couple of woods fields on the same property
because many of his customers are asking for it, maybe they just want some
shade to play in over the summer. The woods/scenario market also seems to
be growing based on the number of companies specializing in supplying that
market, follow the money as they say. Regardless of the determination of
the industry to get us all playing on Pokemon fields, the view of the public
that paintball is a fantasy 'commandoes in the woods' game still seems
pretty strong.

I do know the new hardware is causing problems, and the attitudes filtering
down from the tournament scene as well. I now pick the fields were I play
carefully because I have no intention of being lit up at point blank range
or being shrieked at by little tourney-wannabes who think cursing out the
refs when they get caught cheating is how it's supposed to be done.
Cheating and assholic behavior have always been there of course, but there
was a time when most of us at least tried to keep a lid on it, now it seems
like behaving badly isn't just accepted, it's expected.

Or maybe I'm just an old fart who can't keep up with these young kids with
their 20bps guns and their neon jersies and their pierced eyebrows and so I
***** about it all. Maybe, but you should see my new pump gun Tony, made
from a Gen-X Cocker, Chipley pump kit, DYE single swing frame, shoots
*darts* -- now that's what I call paintball. ;-)

You have hit it square on the head. I go to a couple of fields down
here and a lot of the back yard :-). I love it when I am playing at
my regular field (speedball only) and some kid with an attitude comes
out and runs his mouth or cheats an wipes behind the bunkers and then
lies about it.

We have some pretty good refs but even so they can not be everywhere
at the same time. I love to assist with attitude adjustments being
and older person and having 2 kids of my own. It is fun to watch
these people try and pull the attitudes on the field.

We had one kid once about 16-17 years of age who was wiping so bad it
just started to look like a giant smear. The ref (who was a smaller
than most of the people on the field) called out the 16-17yoa. The
kid argued with the ref. At that point the ref signaled to the other
ref for assistance. There was three of us regulars on the field when
this began and we all stood up and charged the 16-17yoa at the same
time. We so called "lit him up" at the same time and unmercifully.
The ref at the point again said "You are out" and my buddy yelled,
"Lets see if you can wipe that". I know he had to be hurting as he
had no less than 4 hits on his mask and then the rest of his body was
unknown. We never closed within 10-15 feet and we did not need to.

The kid started running his mouth and cussing. I simply stated in a
nice tone as I would with my kids :-) keep it up and we will do it
every time and forget about anybody else on the field. He shut his
mouth but continued to pout while he sat out the next two games. He
then came in on the third game. My buddy said the 16-17yoa, "It is
your choice". He played and immediately called himself out when he
was hit. He is now somewhat of a regular there now and has a pretty
good attitude.

The body piercing just indicates a confused individual. I mean the
only people that pierce their body's for any reason are primitive
tribes of people/Indians. Not to mention the animals such as placing
a bull ring in that cow or bull's nose. I further feel if they want
to have this done to themselves they need to go and join the primitive
tribes where they live or carry a lead rope so we can hook it to them
and tie them up outside like an animal. I see a lot of parking posts
that are already installed at a lot of convenience stores where a lot
of these people work or visit. These could double as a hitching post.
Is that a coincidence?
