Before I start. I just want to ask that you give me straight answers
and skip the stuff about my mother or my mental health. I am 15 and
just getting into paintball so I won't pretend to know shit.
I am trying to decide between a Tippmann 98 Custom and a VL Triad.
Now, before you all decide to rag on me for my stupidity, allow me to
explain.
Being 15, I have many problems in the cash department. The Triad is
being offered to me for $40 from a friend. I have shot the gun and was
pretty pleased with the results.
Of course when I talked to some serious paintballers about the deal
they laughed and told me to save up for a Tippmann.

Is the Tippmann really worth the extra $100 dollars, or would that
money be better spent on a membership for the local field.

Listen to the people who laugh at you and save up for the Tippmann.
You'll be happy you did in the long run. VLs have a bad reputation for
turning into a turd with a trigger after a few weeks. Tippmanns,
however, can be put through hell and still work just fine for years.

What he said. There is a reason tippmans are used for rentals almost
everywhere. They are practically inestructable. On top of that they are
pretty accurate for the price and very reliable. $40 to me for a VL
seems like a rip off, you would be better getting a plastic brass eagle
pump for $25 lol

And your field has amembership fee? I don't think Ive seen a field have
a membership fee, how does it work? Can you still walk on if you don't
have a membership?

buy the triad. i have had one. a couple of the guys that play on our
field have them. they are decent markers. if you are just getting into
it then buy the cheaper gun. play a little. if you lose interest or
decide not to play anymore, then you haven't lost much. in my opinion
the tippman 98 is an "all around" better marker. but, you're only 15,
you've got plenty of time to buy one.

get the triad. go play. at the same time be saving up for the tippman

There is nothing wrong with being 15, or ignarant about paintball.
If you want to be a real man, don't use language that your mother wouldn't
aprove of.

You are dealing with the struggle we all face when deciding to buy
something. Is it worth the extra money?

In this case, the answer is yes. I understand that your funds are limited,
and that $100.00 is a lot of money. If you buy the VL, it will stop working
in a short amount of time. What will you do then? You won't have the money
to get it fixed, and Wal-Mart won't do it for you.

I run a small paintball shop. Every gun I sell comes with a lifetime labor
warranty. If it breaks, I fix it for free for a year, and you only buy parts
after that. Therefore, I don't sell guns that will require me to do a lot of
free work on them. You will not find any VL, or Brass eagle guns in my shop.
You will find Tippmanns. I'll be happy to work on your VL when it breaks,
but I charge $50.00 per hour. How many repairs can you afford?

I guess there is a field play fee. The membership basically pays for
it. I'm not 100% sure on how the fees work.

When the VL gun breaks, and it will, getting it fixed will be a pain, repair
parts for VL products are hard to come by, just the opposite with Tippmann.
Tippmann's guns are tough, they have excellent warranty service, and local
dealers can easily get repair parts, so if you ever do need repairs it isn't
a big deal. The agony of saving up the extra money for the Tippmann will be
matched with years of reliable service, your choice.

Another point is that with a tippman, if youw ant to upgrade down the
line, you can do more than just replace the barrel (I assume the VL uses
spyder thread??) there is a WHOLE world of upgrade parts out there for
the 98. Completely ignoring the issue of reliability for a minute, it
WILL end up costing less in the long run if you stay with paintball. If
you drop $40 now on a VL and 6 months from now feel like you want a
better marker you are stuck with just being able to upgrade the barrel.
With the tippman you can upgrade all osrts of stuff besides the
barrell. Bolts, trigger systems, all manner of appearance modification
to make it look like an assult rifle if thats your thing (dont get shot
by the cops carrying that around on the street) etc...

All around the tippy is a MUCH better marker. If cost is totally
causing a problem, and you don't want to spend 150 on the tippman you
canprobably pick up a spyder for around $100, and those, while being a
bit less in the longevity and durability department, are every bit as
good as a tippman everywhere else (of course I am sure this will spawn a
huge thread of argument.. lol). I assume you are looking at the package
deal with the 9 oz tank and mask? Pick up a $60 - $70 spyder, a $25 JT
mask, and a 20 oz tank for like $15 or something. just over $100 and
you have a pretty good starter setup. Then if you decide later on that
you don't want to play anymore you caan probably dump the whole setup on
someone else for 50 -75 locally and your out about the same you would be
with the VL.

I bought the Triad used it once and it started to leak c02 out of it. I took
it back and stupid me bought another Triad used it once and it did not work,
it was acting like it was out of c02 with a full tank. I don't if a seal in
it was gone or what so I took that one back and will never buy a triad
again. For the extra cash the Tippman98 is the way to go very good reliable
gun unlike the Triad. DO NOT BUY the Triad it would be a waste of your money
and guarntee you will dissapointed.

In a word, yes.
The vl will crap out on you after a year, a decade later the tippman will be
going great.
