I read a review on an Arikon saying that it did 500 feet per second on the
shelf, is there anything that will go above that. I know that it is
pointless because almost no tournemts allow this.

I believe that 500 fps is the point where the classification of a gun
changes, in that it comes under many more restrictions with respect to use,
oh yes and I am not talking about paintball rules, I am talking about the
law.

No sane fields or players allow velocities that high, either.

I figured that sounded crazy. I talked to some of the people and all of them
had to cut there springs.

Actually no tourney will aloow speeds that fast. Not only that but a
paintball masks len is only rated for impacts around 310 fps.

Mask lenses have a much greater capability than 310FPS. JT used to run
an ad where they showed a spectra that had been hit with a shotgun
blast at close range. It obviously wouldn't play again, but it wasn't
broken enough to let anything hit your face. Lenses are extremely
durable, but they're supposed to have a very high safety margin. I'd
bet a mask will take a reasonably slow repetitive series of impacts at
500FPS with no problems, but if you hammer it too much at that kinda
speed you're gonna have some cracking. Ofcourse this also requires
players to follow the guidelines and annually replace lenses.

On another note, at 500FPS a lot of ammo will have a hard time getting
launched. The impact pressure of the initial air blast usually splits
the ball before it gets started down the barrel. I've never seen a gun
hit 500, but I've seen a VM do 370 with a lot of breakage issues. No,
we didn't play with the VM like that; we're safe.

"Rated for" and "can take" are two *VERY* separate issues. We once took a
cracked lens and beat on it with a ball pein hammer for half an hour and the
thing STILL wasn't broken through. It was *massively* fucked up, make no
mistake, but the thing was still in one piece.

Those lenses, to my understanding, can take a shotgun blast from 3 feet away
without failing. The government doesn't **** around with the material
requirements of eye protection(dunno what division that is, OSHA maybe??)

What ought one to say then as each hardship comes? I was practicing for
this, I was training for this.

true... i've seen a proflex get hit with a pball from a gun (armotech mars
stock out of the box) chronoing at 465fps at point blank range & nothing
happened
