Two recent visits to Camouflage Paintball in Hampshire (A32) for
separate 14th birthdays have put us off the sport. As first timers both boys took their friends. I am the father of one of the boys. We were being fired upon by guys with gas guns with more than treble the power of the rental equipment. We suffered severe bruising all over our bodies. It was clear from the first game that our paintballs were not reaching the enemy although the artillery being fired at us was over powered and painful. When asked, a marshal confirmed that others had more powerful equipment. These people were regulars to the site. The manager lied through his teeth whilst almost laughing at me when I complained. "All the guns are the same", he continued to say "You are imagining things" All of our team were at the mercy of weekend warriors who are basic cowards. They were happy to hurt us knowing our balls would not even reach them. As an experiment I aimed my weapon high, just to see if I could drop one on their heads…..this did not work as the gun was still far too weak. When I got home I discussed the situation with the parents who led the team the week before. They had the same opinion but were too embarrassed to complain. So here is a warning to others thinking of attending the A32 Camouflage in Hants UK. Go, pay £300 for a day to be picked off by wannabee weekend cowardly heros. If the skinhead Rambo's who shot at us read this…good you are bald headed cowards with gas guns who love to take pot shots at people who trusted your friend the manager. I will be complaining to the Cascades Portsmouth shopping mall where the site was promoted and where we discovered it. The site also advertises on local busses. The bus firms will also be made aware of this situation. |

It is *highly* unlikely that their guns were firing hot. More likely, you were opposing some players who had actually spent time tuning their guns to operate on the edge. Using rental gear, which was likely shooting at least 30fps under the speed limit, the perception might have been that you were using gear that was underpowered. Not really, you were just using gear that wasn't tuned to optimal performance, like most rental gear. The guns used by "regulars" of paintball are often firing very rapidly, and very close to the legal speed limit. Because their gear is more expensive, they can tune it to sit nearer to the 300fps limit without going over. This results in both longer range and harder hits, as would be expected. Furthermore, since they are probably shooting SO much more paint, when you DO get hit, it's going to be by more paintballs, further adding to the damage you suffer. It is not uncommon to get bruises and welts from paintball hits. Quite frankly, it's part of the game. If you can't stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen. Honestly, what did you expect would happen when you got hit by a marble travelling at 200 miles per hour? Just as an example: http://www.goslin.info/CloseShot/index.htm 3 feet away, at 220 fps(about 2/3rds as fast as what you were probably shot at) > When asked, a marshal confirmed that others had more powerful > equipment. These people were regulars to the site. "More powerful" == more expensive. The guns you were provided are just as capable of firing at the same speed, but probably were not set up to do so. More powerful probably also meant "a higher rate of fire", they could shoot more quickly than you guys could. The marshal was, in essence, dumbing it down for you. > The manager lied through his teeth whilst almost laughing at me when I > complained. "All the guns are the same", he continued to say "You are > imagining things" He's quite right. The guns *ARE* all the same... technically. And you probably were blowing it out of proportion. The reason the other guys weren't complaining is simple: they play paintball all the time and are used to the hits. Heck, I don't even feel hits any longer, except to note that I've been eliminated. > All of our team were at the mercy of weekend warriors who are basic > cowards. They were happy to hurt us knowing our balls would not even > reach them. You stepped onto a field surrounded by rank amateurs and took on the big boys and got smoked, that's what happened. What you *NEED* to do is find a field that separates the novices from the regulars, and most fields do that these days. I think that once you do that, you'll find the game MUCH more enjoyable. Our field calls it "limited" vs "unlimited" division. If you've got a fancy gun, you play unlimited. > If the skinhead Rambo's who shot at us read this.good you are bald > headed cowards with gas guns who love to take pot shots at people who > trusted your friend the manager. I don't suppose it occurred to you to call the field owner and chat about the situation? Nope, didn't think so. The "field manager" you aluded to speaking to earlier was probably NOT the guy in charge, just the guy behind the counter that day. Find the guy in charge, and remember, you can catch more flies with honey than vinegar. -- Jeff Goslin - MCSD - www.goslin.info It's not a god complex when you're always right |

The bus firms > will also be made aware of this situation. If they were using gas guns, what were you using? Pump? Blow guns? This is what I've learned in my short time of playing: No one wants to lose. Losers will make up any excuse. I played this weekend against another group. Most of them had their own gear (as we did too). They lost 7 of the 8 matches we played. Why? Because there were 7 of them and 10 of us. Not necessarily because we're better than them but having more people makes it harder to win. But what did they complain about? That *I* was shooting hot. One of the refs said, "hey, they think you're shooting hot." I replied that he had seen me chrono at 275 (speed limit: 280) and he said he knows and that he just wanted me to know that they were accusing me of raising my marker's velocity. Anyhow, if you thought it was unfair, why didn't you pipe up and tell the management? If you've never played, you'll get taken to the cleaners every time, even by people who have only played a couple times. Rental equipment is always pretty bad but there are some fields that are grossly worse than others. Of the two fields I've played, Mad Ivan's (Fort Worth, Texas) maintenance was so poor, almost every rental gun was breaking paint in the barrels because the ball detents were bad, had leaks in the tanks and was just a poorly run operation. Official Paintball's (Forney, Texas) maintenance is outstanding. Their rental guns aren't anythign special. They're bottom end Piranha guns but they are well maintained and everyone I know that has rented from them hasn't had any problems. Their management stands outside to talk to customers and get feedback and suggestions. They run a really good operation. -Bruce |

My nephew and I played a few weeks ago with a bunch of guys who were well organized and brought their own equipment. This means: 1. It's probably better maintained than the rental gun. 2. It's firing probably pretty close to spec. It was my nephew's first time on a field and my second. This means that we are going to be basically targets until we learn some tactics, and practice, practice, practice with our markers. If you take a bunch of n00bs (like I am) on a field you are going to get shot a lot. And when you get hit, it's probably going to hurt. You just have to shrug, figure what you did wrong (like when I stuck my left ass cheek inadvertently around the tree) and try not to do it again. A group of pros don't usually like games that last 2 minutes. They like a bit of a challenge so they'll usually be amenable to reorganizing teams if you ask them nicely. BTW, I have a shaved head, and I don't like being referred to as a "skinhead". It has a couple of advantages. It seems to make my mask fit better, and I can wear these cool camo doo-rags ![]() -Tony -- Reliable, Unix shell accounts. http://www.jtan.com/proshell/ cl00bie @ IRC - /server cookie.sorcery.net 9000, http://www.sorcery.net We welcome WebTV'ers - http://www.sorcery.net/help/index.html#WebTV |

I find a shaved also makes me cooler in summer, whereas a huge mop of hair
tends to make me "overheat" easily :-) Cheers, Daniel "Tony Miller" <tony@cigardiary.com> wrote in message news:slrncqnfnq.9oe.tony@home.cigardiary.com... > On 29 Nov 2004 02:18:52 -0800, steve > <steve@decopinball.co.uk> wrote: > > <Snip> > > > If the skinhead Rambo's who shot at us read this.good you are bald > > headed cowards with gas guns who love to take pot shots at people who > > trusted your friend the manager. Your comments are well taken, however I would like to note that real "pros" will rarely be found lighting up rental beginners, it's the TWIBS -- tournament wannabes -- who buy the same gear as real tourney players and dress up like they're World Cup winners and DO like to light up rental beginners who create this impression in the minds of casual players. |

At one time British law required *extremely* low velocities for airguns (well actually impact energy rather than velocity, but it amounts to the same thing), and rental gear had to be set to that speed to avoid the heavy hand of the law. If that's still the case, then there might have been quite a difference between rental markers and privately-owned gear that the owners had cranked up. |

First, of all chronographing the the markers will tell the speed of the ball, thus allowing you to know if the marker is shooting hot. Second, as others have stated, privately owned geer tends to be in better shape than rental, so the owner was stretching the truth when he said all the markers where the same. Third, my friends 6 year old sometimes plays paintball with us, and while we do not make it a point to hunt the poor tyke down and pepper his butt, he does get hit. Then he goes and sits in the out area, cries, and when the next game starts he is right back in there with the big boys. Paintball does hurt. as Jeff Goslin pointed out a ball traveling 300 feet per second is traveling at 200 miles per hour, or in your case, 322 kilometers per hour. And that is about the speed most people try to set their marker close to. A marker shooting faster will be concidered hot. If you are unhappy with this paintball park, do not go back, let your money speak for you. If your sons still want to play paintball, see about getting them some low end markers and masks. I am lost to where Hamshire is located in Britian, but there must be a field or a park where they can play. Make sure to get permission before playing on someone elses land, and check the local laws before playing on public land. -- John TI2#003 seerazREMOVE@aol.com |

True. The kind of player that I aspire to be doesn't light up anyone. If I shoot someone twice, that's one shot too many. ![]() Also, the beginners are the next generation of players. You really have to encourage them to remain in the game, or there will be nobody to play with. -Tony -- Reliable, Unix shell accounts. http://www.jtan.com/proshell/ cl00bie @ IRC - /server cookie.sorcery.net 9000, http://www.sorcery.net We welcome WebTV'ers - http://www.sorcery.net/help/index.html#WebTV |
