I know this question has been asked a buncha times, but I'm wondering if any
new info has come up. I have a bone stock A5 and I'm looking to get more
distance and accuracy without making my gun temperamental. Prolly what
everyone wants. Anyhow, is the flatline barrel worth it? I've heard its
hard to install correctly, that it eats paint, etc... Is this still the
current sentiment?

For that matter, are barrels really worthwhile mods to consider making?
I've heard some folks say that they don't make much difference at all.

Bah. That's all crap. In my experience, the Flatline was well worth it, but it
may not be under your circumstances. In big open spaces, chances are you're
better off getting a J&J and learning to arc correctly. Then again, if you find
yourself under tree cover or shooting into a lot of windows, that flat
trajectory is just what you need.
I'll put down a few mythes, on both sides. It's not a 'sniper' barrel. It's
not as accurate as, say, a Dye barrel, but a few well-placed shots can mark
someone you couldn't with a standard barrel. It makes the consistancy a bit
worse, especially with small paint. It doesn't send balls winging off in every
direction after a certain range, as long as you use decent paint--PMI Premium's
my favorite. It *does* tend to make balls 'float' upward until it's broken in,
unless you drop the velocity a bit, but that wears off as the sandcoating on
the inside smoothens. On the other hand, they don't 'drop and float', and don't
go slower than any other barrel at the same muzzle velocity, like some people
say.
As for it's problems, as long as the paint's decent (Again, Premium, but Game
Face Sunflares shoot well under slightly shorter ranges), it's not particularly
hard on paint. And it's stupidly easy to install. Loosen the front the screws,
shove it in, and give it a quarter-twist so the adapter is at the bottom of the
shroud. Tighten the screws again, and go shoot.

Then those folks are just about stupid. The stock A5 barrel isn't any more
than a pipe. Any after-market barrel would be an improvement.

My wife ditched her Intimidator for a Reactive A5 w/ Flatline, then we pout
on a combat collapsible rear stock and a "M16" magazine looking expansion,
and a shroud that looks like a grenade launcher. Ala Scenario Game special.
But besides the cosmetics, she can out distance me w/ flatter shots to where
I have to hail mary w/ my cocker or minimag.

After playing with the flatline, once you learn to hold the barrel in the
proper vertical aspect it is a GREAT distance enhancer. My wife is usually
playing as my wingman so to speak and can often times snipe out a player at
ranges well exceeding my hailmary shots. If you shoot longball its the way
to go. if you do all close combat, stay with a normal barrel.

I agree with what MathU41 and Kenner say. I use a flatline w/a5 and have
never broken a ball with it, even RTing like a mofo.

It does take some time to get good with it -- mostly because its very
sensitive to how you hold the gun. If you tend to hold it off virticle a
wee bit the shots will curve -- which can be very very handy once you get
used to it. For example, by cocking the gun one way or the other you can
curve around cover -- not huge amounts -- but enough to make some shots
you'd never make with a regular barrel.

Its crap in the wind I gotta say -- but so are most barrels.

You can install one in about 2 mins and one thing I found helpful is to
keep the front screws a bit loose and site it in by twisting the barrel a
bit untill you're firing on target.

some people really hate them, but I like mine. The best would be if you
could find one and try it first. They are kinda spendy

The only barrel that helps is a CMI tru flite. Better range accuracy
and a menacing report

Bah. Any aftermarket barrel should help. TruFlites really aren't bad barrels,
assuming your paint fits them right and they're clean. Get loose paint or a
speck of liquid in it, and you couldn't hit a barn if you were inside it.
