I was just thinking today about paintball back in the mid-90s, and I
started to recall the old J&J hardchromes, old BOAs, and other barrels
of that vintage. I remember a special J&J design that was a variant
on the Whisper that was made for just one team that I played with and
against quite a bit...they called it the Timberwolf barrel, and it
just shot like a dream. And now, in these days of barrel kits and
aluminum and titanium and carbon-fiber, I just have to wonder where
those barrels have ended up. Not just the Timberwolf barrels, but all
those brass and hardchromes and so on.

Sure would love to have one or two of those again.

Many of my older barrels don't work too well these days because most of the
paint is smaller than it used to be, and using closed-bolt guns like Cockers
the paint rolls out the barrel. I wish they still made the old Nelson paint
like we could get back in the late 80s/early 90s, that stuff flew forever,
but with the rate of fire of today's paintguns that paint would be like
getting hit with a jackhammer.

I remember a run of "special" J&Js that this one team I knew had,
around '94-'96. They weren't for sale...imagine a hardchrome Whisper
with porting that went around the entire circumference. I *think*
they may have been matched to ProBall, but whatever the deal was, they
were really great barrels. I just today looked up one of those guys
via e-mail to see if he still played and if he'd want to sell one, and
he said he wouldn't part with any of them. Damn.

Nelson does make all their paints still.

From the old school plain jane Nelson all the way up to their new super
expensive near perfectly round paintballs they make for the US Seals.

My favorite is Nelson Challenger in Gold/Purple/Purple.

Not like that they don't. Their old top-of-the-line paint was fatter and
heavier than anything on the market, it flew further because it had more
mass, at the same velocity it always had a few more yards of useful range.
And the fill was so thick that trying to wipe that stuff just made it worse,
you could see old hits from it on buildings and trees *years* later. What
most people didn't know was that although Nelson made the fill, their paint
was actually encapsulated by R.P. Scherer, I always had to wonder back in
the early 90s when their quality went all wiggly if there wasn't some
corporate sabotage going on. ;-) They're encapsulating their own paint now
of course, I just wish they made something like the old premium, although as
I said, at ten or fifteen balls per second it would be enough to knock you
off your feet.

I've got an old BOA snakebite kickin around the house for cockers. I never
use it any more because like you said it seems way over bore.
