I have no experience with the Spyder guns, but I recently bought a VL Triad
(ViewLoader) and it performs pretty well. It's got an adjustable velocity,
and the player kit comes with an electronic hopper.

I'm sure others out there would suggest a better marker, because I do
believe many better ones exist. I like my marker, so I thought I'd mention
it

Good luck in finding the marker that suits you best, and welcome to the
sport

The first question is, how much money do you want to spend? Keep in
mind that you will need a mask, CO2 tank, hopper, etc. A BASIC package
(Spyder or Piranha) could go anywhere from$150-$250 depending on the
marker and quality of mask.

As to starter guns, the folks in here will all have suggestions, but
the most common starter guns are Tippman 98, or Spyder or Pirahna.
(markers alone costing $50-$150) Tippman would be the best quality for
the buck of the three. Stay away from anything where the body is made
of plastic!

As to your specific question, I think the Victor II is a pretty decent
starter marker. I bought one for my son and it has performed
flawlessly. They are low maintenance, inexpensive, and suprisingly
consistent for a "low end" marker. That particular model has several
features that make it stand out from the others in it's price range.
(rubberized fore grip, bottom line, front block "volumizer"). And with
the money you save, you can afford to upgrade the barrel to something
like a JJ ceramic! (Believe me, the FIRST thing you need to upgrade is
the barrel.)

Just remember to clean and lubricate it after each day's use and it
should work out fine for ya!

I hope you enjoy the sport, and remember, safety is always the number
one priority!

My son bought himself a Tippmann 98 market kit at the local Sports Authority for xmas. I
just bought him a Dye Excel 12-inch barrel which dramatically improved the accuracy. So
for under 200 bucks he has a very effective setup.

well, i decided to change it up a bit, and saw that for $50 more i can get
the electronic Spyder imagine. i have heard excellent things about this
gun. what do u all think? i figure i will try a few games before buyin it,
but i don't think it will be an issue. I figure if i can take a hit in the
face by a roundhouse kick and still finish a sparrin match, i can take a
tiny paintball hit. Thanks to everyone for your help.

I have an electronic Spyder myself (AMG) and like the other Spyders,
it is a good, inexpensive, reliable gun, so you should enjoy it. You
still need to get an aftermarket barrel though. Just remember to keep
the battery charged and you're good to go! (I forgot once..nothing
worse than sitting behind a bunker with tons of paint comming at you
and a dead trigger!)

As to the hits....no comparison to a kick to the face...but expect
some pain...and some wicked cool bruises!! (BTW...A head shot from 10
feet does have enough force to cause a mild concussion...so it ain't
all that "tiny"!)
