This morning on the syndicated Bob and Tom Radio Show, they read a news
story about increasing paintball injuries. Of course, they didn't explain that the reason there are more injuries than ever is because there are more people playing than ever. I tried to call in and bring this point up, but the producer (read: shit filter) didn't think it would be something they'd talk about on the air. So I sent them this email: "With regards to your story about paintball injuries: While it is true that injuries are increasing, you have to realize why. Paintball as a sport is growing at an incredible rate. There are hundreds of thousands of more people playing today than even a year ago. So while the number of injuries has increased, the rate of injuries per number of players hasn't. Think about it. In any given sport, a certain percentage of players are going to be hurt every year. The more players, the more injuries. Paintball is having a tough enough time battling an unfair public perception. Talking about increased injuries, without explaining why, is only going to hurt the sport. When played properly, at an official field with proper equipment and supervision, paintball is no more dangerous than baseball, basketball or any other contact sport." Hopefully they'll read at least part of it on the air. It just pissed me off that they talked about the effect without mentioning the cause. And probably frightened a few fence-sitting parents in the process. Hmph. Eric |

I mean 'caution sip carefully' on coffee lids etc?? sheesh Kind of funny I was teaching fencing to our local fire department as part of a fitness thing and I was saying that over the 15 or so years I'd been fencing I'd never seen an injury from a weapon -- stressing safety protocal -- 'only the odd sprained ankle here and there' I said. What happened? One of the guys goes and sprains his ankle like 10 mins after I said that. DOH@!@ -z |

Remember that paintball is statistically pretty much the safest thing you can do with your sporting time, when played correctly. I guess paintball is kind of like air travel. When something goes wrong, it goes *HORRIBLY* wrong(ie someone loses an eye, vs a planeload of nuns crash into a mountain). But for the most part, playing paintball (and air travel) is statistically the safest thing you can do. -- Jeff Goslin - MCSD - www.goslin.info It's not a god complex when you're always right |

I listen to that show on the way to work. I missed that paintball comment,
but sometimes I think they are in their own world. I am sure they are busy with their careers, but besides the news they state on the radio, sometimes it seems they don't have a clue about what is going on. One day they were just ripping on Return Of The King, and thought what a huge geek fest it was. Does anyone remember Robert Plant? he though it was so cool in his youth he mentions it in Led Zeppelin songs. Is HE a geek? no. I remember reading these when I was a kid, and went to see the movies because of that. I thought they were great, well made movies, and Peter Jackson was my favorite director ANYWAYS, because that guy is one sick ******. as an example, check out his movie Meet The Feebles, a classic rated R rip off of the Muppets. http://www.ween.net/feebles/ anyways, I digress. When the folks at Bob&Tom don't understand something, just remember they are there to entertain and not stir up a big controversy. They are looking for a laugh and sometimes their ignorance is frustrating. calling them won't help unless you are going to tell them something funny. -- -- -- EDTHEWARD "EAT PAINT, YOU FRIGGIN'...um.. I'm not going to sit here and tell you that the opening of Phantom Menace was anything other than a bazillion star wars geeks getting to do their version of what star TREK geeks have been doing for eons, that opening was a geek fest from hell. Likewise for the opening of the final installment in the LOTR saga: there are people that I know who are partaking in a LOTR marathon movie viewing, where their asses are surgically implanted in movie theater seats for the entire 12 hours of the series. Don't get me wrong, I *REALLY* like the movies I've seen so far, especially the second one(probably popped into my top ten of all time), but lets be realistic. The guys who are going to see those movies on opening day dressed as their favorite hobbit are, well, a little too into it. Like I said, call a spade a spade. > Does anyone remember Robert Plant? he though it was so cool in his youth he > mentions it in Led Zeppelin songs. Is HE a geek? no. Alrighty, johnny come lately. Jesus christ. I'll wager a year ago, it would have been "peter who?". I had a quick scan of his directorial biography, and it's a veritable what's what of crappy movies, with a few GLARING exceptions. By his own admission, in the DVD content found on the LOTR movies, he freely admits that he was stunned that he was given the task of directing those movies because his previous efforts were, well, stunted at best. Eddie, when you come up with a favorite director, it's usually better NOT to pick the director d'jour, it makes you look like a sheep. I have a favorite director as well, but it's been because of more than one movie(or series). Aliens, True Lies, (not so much Titanic, but it had cool effects at the end, so I guess it's ok), T2/Terminator, The Abyss, etc. Most of my favorite movies of the past 20 years have been James Cameron movies. Spielberg and Lucas films tend to be a bit childish for my tastes, although I have to admit to liking most of the WW2 era serious films that Spielberg has done, including Schindlers List and Saving Private Ryan. Another favorite of late has been the team of Bruckheimer and Bay, with Bad Boys, The Rock, Armageddon, Pearl Harbor, etal. -- Jeff Goslin - MCSD - www.goslin.info It's not a god complex when you're always right |

Jeff, I meant that he was my favorite director "anyways" ever since I saw Bad Taste around 1990.I have been a Fan of Peter Jackson for awhile. I never thought he would get something like this , and I LOOOOOOVE his "crappy movies" they are frikkin hilarious! that's all I had to go on until a few years ago! I used to LOVE to watch campy bad movies, and he was the KING. his first movies were Bad taste and Meet The Feebles and they ruled my world for a long time. I can't remember how many people I forced to watch them. Most thought they were great. When I talk to my old friends from atlanta, and they mention LOTR, I mention those movies that I forced them to watch and all they have to say is "no fucking way! that's the same guy?" so please do not assume I am jumping onto a bandwagon. I own many of his old movies ( VHS, mind you) and they are pretty worn. Best Director in my book doesn't have to be something on a grand scale. I'm just glad he got the job for LOTR, he deserved to be showcased and used to his full potential. He has made some classic goofy movies, and those are the ones I really love. LOTR is just icing. -- -- -- EDTHEWARD "EAT PAINT, YOU FRIGGIN'...um.. I never I know exactly what you meant to say, and understood what you were saying, and commented about exactly what you're talking about. Put more clearly: isn't it funny how everyone is all of a sudden a Peter Jackson fan now? Wow, how weird is that? Couldn't have anything to do with having the task of crafting the LOTR movies, now would it? Nope, nothing at all. Everyone is always saying "oh I was a fan of so-n-so LONG before such-n-such came out". Sure you were. We all were. Like how everyone became a Wings fan in 1997. "I have *always* loved the wings!!" Yeah? Name a player on the roster who wasn't on the roster this year, but WAS on the roster last year. Thought you'd draw a blank. > years ago! I used to LOVE to watch campy bad movies, and he was the KING. One can only be "the king of camp" if one actually has more than a few movies to draw from. His directorial list is all of ~10 movies long, 3 of which are LOTR movies. I don't mind if you say you like campy movies(because I can appreciate that), but don't try to tell me that you like Peter Jackson camp over any other camp. Whyzat?? Because you look like a SHEEP. > his first movies were Bad taste and Meet The Feebles and they ruled my world > for a long time. I can't remember how many people I forced to watch them. > Most thought they were great. You'll forgive my cynicism, but I frankly don't believe you. It is my belief that you decided to like Peter Jackson about a year ago or so, and went out to watch the movies, and declared that you liked them because of the man, not the movies. > so please do not assume I am jumping onto a bandwagon. I own many of his > old movies ( VHS, mind you) and they are pretty worn. Sure you do. Did I mention I was a wings fan? Seriously, I'm sure you do own many of those movies, but at the same time, I wonder when you *really* purchased those movies. Before or after LOTR came out? > Best Director in my book doesn't have to be something on a grand scale. I'm It doesn't have to be, but it helps to be, as is evidenced by the LOTR, not to put too fine a point on it. You look at the movies of the past years that have won for best picture/best director, and invariably they are sweeping in scope, dramatic in nature. Look, I don't mean to get all in your grill about this, but selecting a favorite director who just happens to be the one who made the latest run at the "trilogy for the new generation" trophy seems more than a tad bit coincidental, don't you think? A few years ago, it would be like saying the Wachowski's are your favorites(cf: the Matrix). -- Jeff Goslin - MCSD - www.goslin.info It's not a god complex when you're always right |

*sigh* whatever, Jeff. you kill me. I'm sorry if you can't fathom that I
could possibly like Peter jackson before he became well known. I only mention Peter NOW because people know who the hell he is.Nobody did before and nobody gave a ****. you know, people have liked the BROWNS for years, (not that I do) but there isn't much to talk about, is there? doesn't mean they aren't a fan. and if they ever get to the super bowl those fans are gonna be proud, happy, and root them on. ( ok, you are probably saying this is not a valid argument because people know who the Browns are before they make it to a superbowl...whatever.) Why do you think I'm lying? what do I have to prove? I am just sharing something that has amused me and my friends. Do I have a history of making big claims on RSP that leads you to believe I am lying out of my teeth? Are you just trying to get my goat or is this your normal stubborn "i know all" personality coming into play? I like Peter Jackson camp over ANY OTHER camp. there, I said it.Believe it or Don't. If you ever decide to watch the 2 movies I mentioned, maybe you would understand wher I am coming from. Bad Taste, and Meet The Feebles. Maybe I'll send you a bad VHS copy ( if you still have a VCR) of both if you will actually watch them.then maybe I'll watch the directors cut of "Aliens"..(burned dvd please, sent priority mail, thanks) If you demand references or a lie detector test, or are willing to shell out 100 bucks if I can prove it in less that 15 seconds in semi, you let me know. I guess I should have said "MY favorite director" not "THE best director" of course he's not the best. there are alot of great movies. he just sits on the top of my favorites, AND THAT DOES NOT NEED TO INCLUDE LOTR. I guess I should have said "MY king of camp" not "THE king of camp" and my "grill" as you called it is private and I wish you would wash yourself before you get into it. -- -- -- EDTHEWARD "EAT PAINT, YOU FRIGGIN'...um..
