What upgrades would a spyder need to be tourny ready?

Not sure if mine's exactly tournament ready, but I'll give you a list of what
I've got on it. 1) HPA. Preset, so I don't have a reg on it. 2)Low pressure
Chamber, in my case the CheckIt Torpedo that came with my 15-degree front
block. And 3) an e-grip. Mine is a 32 Degrees four-mode with a modified
trigger. Dremeled a hole in the plastic block, added a tiny thumbscrew, and
tinkered till the pull's about 1/8th of an inch. Not necessarry but nice is a
15 degree foregrip, high-flow internals (drill out the holes in the foregrip)
and a delrin/nylon/nylatron bolt. My Spudknuk'l bolt reduces the internal
weight, thus reducing kick and lifting efficiency a bit. Infomercial over. :P

First, replace the body with an Autococker body. Then, switch out the
internals -- valve, main spring, etc -- for Autococker internals.
Add a cocking rod, bolt, and back block out back; buy an LPR, 4-way,
and ram and mount those on an Autococker front block up front. Hose
up the pneus, link the ram and back block with a 'cocker pump rod,
attach a 'cocker grip frame to the body and tie the 4-way to the
trigger plate with a threaded timing rod. Finally, screw an inline
reg into the ASA; add a nice air setup and hopper, put on an
Autococker-threaded barrel, and top it all off with a beavertail.
There, you're all set.

....
All kidding aside, there's no real set list of `tourney ready' upgrades.
It's really up to you what aspects of your marker you want to change
before entering a tournament. What aspects of its performance are
you not happy with?

Velocity consistency sucks? Hot gun penalties? Get a better air setup.
Paint goes everywhere except where you aim? Try new paint or barrel.
Can't hose paint fast enough? Buy an electronic gripframe, etc.

On the other hand, if, in your sole opinion, you are pleased with the
gun's performance as-is, then just go and play. Spend your time
improving your skills, not emptying your wallet.

You'd seriously be better off saving your money and just getting a cheap
impulse, used Angel/Matrix, or something. Trust me on this. I've been there
before and I made the mistake of adding a lot of upgrades that basically was
putting a band-aid on a broken leg.

I agree with the other guys, it would be better to buy a high-end gun. But you
guys do have to remember that scrounging together money for enough paint for a
tournie and entry fees, atop the jersies and pack and HPA and various other
things you need for a tourny constricts your budget far too much to go out and
by a nice but horribly overpriced gun. Sometimes the most we can hope for is to
get a Spyder good enough to win and hope there's something better in the prize
package.

I think what the other guys are getting at is this: You can dump 500
dollars worth of upgrades into a Spyder, but it's still a Spyder. For what
you've already spent(in my example), you could've gone out & gotten a better
marker used. I've been there, & done that - I played with a Spyder for two
years, & dumped a buttload of bucks into pretty much every upgrade that came
along, bought several different high-dollar barrels for it, & essentially
gained nothing but an empty wallet. I understand the minimal funding issue,
but IMHO you might be better off just using it like it is, & hoarding your
pennies until you can move up to a higher end marker - even if it's a used
one. There's some decent deals on eBay, just use a little common sense, &
watch the seller's feedback rating.

That is a good point, yes. But with some shopping around, it won't put you back
too much. Including the marker itself, I've spent maybe $190, give or take, on
my marker. Considering the 'high end' spyders sell for $200 and up, not a bad
deal for one that can take you into local tournies. :P

Ok, there's no need to dump $500 into your Spyder to make it decent.
Get HPA, a 12v Rev, a nice comfortable drop, a decent barrel, and if you
have a vertical feed Spyder, get one of those aluminum feed necks instead of
those cheap plastic straight 'elbows' from Kingman. Check the archives at
www.paintball.com if you dont know what I'm talking about, they did an
article on Spyder stuff a few weeks ago. If you dont have an electro
trigger, try and find one cheap. Or find someone who can do a decent trigger
job for you. It's not overly complicated and you can get the pull down to
about 5mm. It's still really stiff but WAY better than stock.

So the only Spyder-specific upgrades you need are a barrel ($60), an
aluminum feed neck ($15), and possibly an electro frame. That could be a
little pricey but not entirely necessary.

I played 3 or 4 local tournaments last season with a Spyder setup. I used a
stock barrel from a JT Excellerator that I paid $5 for (incredible barrel,
BTW), 2 drops that my teammate had sitting around in his closet, a used 12v
rev ($40 CDN) , and a used PMI PE regulator ($50 CDN). Reliable, simple,
easy to fix, never broke paint. It was a nice little setup and did the job
just fine.

Yes, but it's no more or less a Spyder than if you only dump $100 into it.
There's no need to replace every part in the gun. He just wants to know what
upgrades do the most good for a Spyder.

it needs the attachment of a good player. There are little things you can do to
enhance the reliability or performance of the gun, but your best bet is to
focus your resources on practicing the game.
