So, this afternoon, my wife is out doing errands and stuff, so I decide that
now would be as good a time as any to watch a movie that would do justice to the obnoxiously loud way I like to watch movies. I went and picked up The Two Towers. I know this is about ten months late, but, I just have to say this: That movie is probably one of the best movies I have ever seen. And heck, I'm not even that INTO the fantasy movie genre. Fantastic effects, great acting, story that is well adapted, sweeping cinematography, score that was phenomenal, sound that makes my hair stand on end, DAMN!!! It's definitely in my Top 10 movies of all time, and I have a sneaking suspicion that the Lord of the Rings trilogy will become this generation's "Trilogy with a capital T", ala Star Wars of my generation, and the Godfather of the generation before. However, it's gonna take a monster to unseat my favorite movie of all time, and while this movie was awesome, it didn't quite do it. However, it's kind of hard to compare a sci-fi action movie to a fantasy epic. -- Jeff Goslin - MCSD - www.goslin.info It's not a god complex when you're always right |

Given that ringing endorsement, I'd be extremely curious to know what
tickles your fancy when it comes to movies. I mean, what does a movie have to do to impress you? What are some of your favorites, and what makes them good? -- Jeff Goslin - MCSD - www.goslin.info It's not a god complex when you're always right "Daniel Martin" <dwmartin@idirect.com> wrote in message news:vobvcjia1crq98@corp.supernews.com... > Aih, it was ok, better than ok maybe, but wasn't write home to mom about. > > Dan > > "Jeff Goslin" <autockr@comcast.net> wrote in message > news:8KydnQofS6VERxiiXTWJhg@comcast.com... > > So, this afternoon, my wife is out doing errands and stuff, so I decide > that > > now would be as good a time as any to watch a movie that would do justice > to > > the obnoxiously loud way I like to watch movies. I'll reserve judgement on the whole "great trilogy" thing until the trilogy is complete. You'll note that my position on it is still in the "sneaking suspicion" phase. ![]() My favorite movie of all time is Aliens. The Directors Cut of Aliens is absolutely amazing, it really makes the story make a hell of a lot more sense. If you liked Aliens in the theatre, and want to watch it again, go rent the DVD of the Directors cut. There's about 40 more minutes of footage and most of it is way more than just fluff. A lot of director's cut type stuff is just extra fluff shit, but they took out some MAJOR story elements from the movie. -- Jeff Goslin - MCSD - www.goslin.info It's not a god complex when you're always right |

Although, I suppose your statement is technically true, since in order for there to have been a fourth, there must have been a third. On the other hand, the fourth Star Wars movie has been around since the mid 70's, and the third one is barely in production almost three decades later, so what the hell do I know. Who is this George Lucas ****, and what's he doing making movie 6 before movie 1? Hasn't he ever heard of linear character development? Sheesh. What, is he taking a page from the Tarantino school of writing or something? My "not a trilogy yet" was referring to the LOTR soon-to-be trilogy, since, at the time, we had not discussed the movies Alien, Aliens, Alien 3 or Alien Ressurection. -- Jeff Goslin - MCSD - www.goslin.info It's not a god complex when you're always right |

It's just awaiting it's one year release date from 2. The CGI in The Two Towers was in my opinion far better then anything else out there to this date. Golum was almost seamless in his transactions with Frodo and Sam. The only thing I hate about movies now a days is that they save all this extra footage to make their collectors/director cut editions for the sole purpose of making money. It is always put out several months after the first edition is released. I understand the reasons..I'd just like for once a company to come out and say...this Movie is just too important to not release both a more expensive directors cut and the big screen rendition at the same time. Frugal movie goers can buy what they saw on screen and true lovers of the movie can buy it in it's true form and enjoy it. |

Starship Troopers is one of my all time favs, PURE eye/brain candy, Blues
Brothers, for the subtle comedy. Pulp Fiction for it's gratuitous violence and character development <G>. and the Matrix for it's alterior dimension theme, something a friend and I pondered about 20 years ago. Unforgiven , and this one actually for it's character development, Clint, being reborn, slides back to the evil, yet justified, killer that he spent his whole life being. I believe the line was "When you kill a man, you take away all he has and all he is gonna have" that stuck me as .... stunning. There's a few more that I've caught on the history channel that have kept me glued, but for the most part, I can't say that too many movies tickle it for me, I'm usually left thinking, wow, there's an hour and a half I won't get back. Well, the reasons are usually much more than financial. The producers have a fiduciary responsibility to the studios to produce a movie that the masses will go to see. Market research basically says that if a movie runs longer than about 2 hours and 15 minutes, it's not going to be well received, that it will be seen as "boring" or "too long". Movies from certain directors(Spielberg and Cameron spring to mind) tend to have a whole gob of extra shit that is definitely important to the storyline as a whole, but make the movie literally hours longer than the standard studio cutoff. Producers, directors and studios often get into HUGE pissing matches about what needs to go and what needs to stay before the movie is released. Certain movies do not require a "director's cut", and those movies I would definitely agree have only one purpose for releasing a director's cut(to make money). Other movies really do benefit from having the extra footage in them, but can't release that footage to the theater because it would affect the box office bottom line due to it's length. The move that pisses me off the most is this one: "Exclusive to DVD!" vs "Exclusive to Video!" vs "Exclusive to Special Edition!" vs "Exclusive to Director's Edition". You don't get everything you want from the one version, and in order to see the entirety of the content, you have to purchase two versions of the same movie. Personally, just on principle, I have NEVER done that. -- Jeff Goslin - MCSD - www.goslin.info It's not a god complex when you're always right |
