He (Fred Halmone) knew the snake player (Tyler Humphrey) was there, but half way through his run back right (Dave Fason) popped out, so Halmone tried to put Fason in real quick so he could bunker THump.

Basically, he was hoping Fason wasn't going to pop out, but he did.
